International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a day dedicated to recognizing the achievements of women and promoting gender equality.  This global celebration did not emerge in isolation but has its roots deeply embedded in the history of social activism and labor rights.

The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 1900s when women’s rights activists and suffragettes began to organize around the world for better working conditions, political representation, and equal rights.  The first National Woman's Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28, 1909, arranged by the Socialist Party of America and the Suffrage Movement.  However, it was the tragic events on March 8, 1917, known as "Bloody Sunday," when women protested against World War I and for their right to vote in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), Russia, that led to the day becoming a symbol of women's resistance.

Following this, at the International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen in 1910, organized by the Second International Socialist Women's Conference, it was declared that a global celebration for women should be held on March 8th each year.  The day was chosen to commemorate the strike of textile workers in the U.S., which had taken place on the same date in 1857. Over the years, the day has evolved into a call for women's empowerment and an end to discrimination, sexism, and violence against women.  It is a platform for both celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women as well as a catalyst for advocating for gender parity.
