Varroa is a genus of parasitic mesostigmatan mites associatedwith honey bees, placed in its own family, Varroidae.The condition of a honeybee colony being infested with Varroa mites is called varroosis (also, incorrectly,  varroatosis).

Varroa mites, specifically the species Varroa destructor, are recognised as the biggest pest to honeybees worldwide due to their ability to transmit diseases such as deformed wing virus (or DWV) to larval or pupating bees, resulting in death or severe deformity of the pupae.

How to protect bees from Varroa

1.Powdered sugar

Sprinkling or applying powdered sugar on bees can serve as a method for mite control as this stimulates grooming behavior,but this is labor intensive, so beekeepers should weigh the costs and benefits when considering this practice. 

2.Soft Chemicals

Organic acids, essential oils, and hop beta acids are considered soft chemicals because they are naturally derived.

But Efficacy of these treatment can be low so it should be combined with other treatment methods.

3.The chemical control of varroa mites

The chemical control of varroa mites can be realized by using various acaricides/miticides. Fluoramine and coumaphos are the most widely used treatment methods for mites, but mites have developed resistance to these chemicals, and residues will continue to exist, and will directly harm bees and make bees more susceptible to nosema disease. In addition, these residues can be found in bee products, which makes them less popular with consumers.
